Roger Dean is an Australian composer/improviser and sound-artist. He has performed in more than 30 countries, as bassist, keyboardist, and lap-top artist. His compositions include computer and chamber music, and has been commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Alpha Ensemble, the Wallace Collection (UK) and Chaconne Brass (UK). His works are in print with Open University Press (UK/USA), Red House Press, La Trobe University Press, and Sounds Australian, on cd-rom with the International Computer Music Association, and on the web (commissions from the Australian Film Commission, Overland Express, and others). He has published two books on improvisation, and with Hazel Smith he wrote Improvisation, Hypermedia and the Arts Since 1945 (Harwood, 1997). He is developing computer-interactive networked improvisation, sound and text and intermedia work. His most recent book on computer-interactive sound improvisation is in press with for A-R Editions (USA). His music is available on more than 30 commercial recordings, including CDs on Audio Research Editions, Discus, Mosaic, Soma, Future Music Records (FMR) (UK); Jade , Rufus andTall Poppies. (Australia); and Crayon, and Frog Peak (USA). He is the founder and director of austraLYSIS, the international sound and intermedia arts group. Roger has the unusual distinction of being a subject in both the new Grove Dictionary of Music and that of Jazz. He is also currently the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra.
